Seminarians With Disabilities Forum at McCormick Theological Seminary

A panel of seminary students from across Hyde Park discussed their experiences of living with disabilities while preparing for the ministry, and offered suggestions for making theological education institutions more accessible and welcoming.  Also a major part of the discussion was seminary student health insurance, including required-participation health plans that don't help students care for themselves by including preventive care coverage.

Seminarians Join Antiwar Rally, March in Chicago

At least a half-dozen seminary students joined the 4,000+ crowd for the rally and protest march against the Iraq war in downtown Chicago.

Seminarians Join Christian Peace Witness for Iraq in Washington, DC

At least twenty-five seminary students plus faculty and staff traveled to Washington, DC to participate in the Christian Peace Witness for Iraq and other actions on the 4th anniversary of the Iraq war.  Four seminarians were arrested for engaging in the civil disobedience public prayer action in front of the White House.  For more information, including video of the ecumenical prayer service at the National Cathedral prior to the candlelight procession and White House vigil, please visit www.christianpeacewitness.org

SeminaryAction Student Leader's Colloquy Sponsors LGBTQ Seminarian's Forum at UofC

Nearly thirty seminarians gathered at the University of Chicago Divinity School to hear the experiences of LGBTQ seminarians from each of the schools across Hyde Park.  The gathering included a panel of speakers representing the various seminaries, and was facilitated by Mike Underhill, director of the LGBTQ Studies Center at Chicago Theological Seminary.  The discussion continued for nearly three hours with enthusiasm for further cross-campus cooperation.  For more information, check the March 14 Edition of the Hyde Park Seminarian, and the directory for campus LGBTQ groups.

Vagina Monologues Productions Includes Widest Cast Among Seminaries Ever!

This year, the cast of the annual Hyde Park Seminaries' production of the Vagina Monologues grew to include members from Meadville-Lombard Theological School, Chicago Theological Seminary, as well as students from Loyola and the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration.  This year brought the widest representation yet of race, ethnicity, nationality, and sexual orientation.  Despite protests from conservative male voices who believed seminaries were not an appropriate venue for the production, the show was a success and funds raised for local domestic violence survivor support services.

Seminarians Protest the School of the Americas at Ft. Benning, GA

Several seminarians traveled to the annual School of the Americas protest at the gates of Ft. Benning, GA.  Students participated in the march, the die-in, the Puppetista dramatization, and the drum circle.  Local pastor Don Coleman of University Church was arrested for civil disobedience crossing the barricade and will likely serve two months in prison later in the year.  For more information, see the SOA Watch website, or you can read participant Le Anne Clausen's blog posting which includes pictures of the die-in.

Seminary Students Join Mass Immigrant March

CHICAGO: Dozens of seminary students joined the May 1st immigrant rights mega-march in downtown Chicago. Students representing each of the Hyde Park schools either assembled at the morning rally at Union Park, or blended into the marchers as the day wore on. An estimated 400,000 people total were at the day-long event.  Look below for photos of seminarians in action!

Seminary Students Join Ecumenical Advocacy Days in Washington, DC

Nearly a dozen students from the Hyde Park seminaries participated in Ecumenical Advocacy Days, an annual conference of denominational peace and justice organizations working on a variety of concerns.  Many students were able to use scholarships designated for seminarians by their denominations to attend the event, covering the registration fee and transportation costs.  In addition to the workshops, worship services, and plenary sessions of the conference, participants also met with their members of Congress, and joined a rally at the steps of the Capitol building.
